Anita Harding Walters, 94, of Humboldt, Iowa, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2009, at the Humboldt Care Center North in Humboldt, Iowa. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Rockwell City. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mason Lindhart Funeral Home at 612 Second Avenue South, Humboldt, Iowa.
Anita was born on September 18, 1914, in Rockwell City, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis and Bertha Harding. After graduating from high school, Anita earned money for college by working as an office assistant in the Farm Bureau office in Rockwell City. She then attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, where she graduated in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in education.
Anita married Robert Henry Walters in June of 1941, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. During her lifetime Anita was a secretary for six or seven years and a County Extension Home Economist for two years, but for twenty-five years Anita was a teacher in various schools in Iowa, Minnesota and California. At the high school level and at various times she taught English, speech, home economics, art, chemistry, general science, economics, typing and shorthand. She retired from teaching following the 1979 school year. She continued to reside in Humboldt until her death.
Anita was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, P.E.O., and the D.A.R. She enjoyed family get-togethers, water and oil painting, sewing, gardening, reading, refinishing furniture, substitute teaching, and spending weekends at their cottage on Lake Okoboji.
Anita is survived by her son, Steven, and his wife, Mary Sue ("Sue") of Warrenton, Virginia; her son, Scott, of Davenport, Iowa; and her granddaughters, Jan Marie Mielke of Fairfax, Virginia, and Megan Lynn Lambert of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
In addition to her husband who passed away on February 4, 1984, Anita was preceded in death by her brothers, Lewis and Wilbur Harding, and by her sisters, Helen Harding Stephen, Ruth Harding Cooper and Virginia Harding Roth.
