Arlene O. Sawyer, 98, of Humboldt, passed away November 14, 2008 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 12:00 noon Monday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Visitation will be from 10-12 p.m. Monday at the church. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Sawyer is survived by her daughter, Helen (James) Goodell of Dakota City; son, Ken (Ellen) Sawyer of Adel; grandchildren, Jane (Tim) Zabka of Leigh, NE, Julie (Terry) Austin of Ranger, TX, Jill (Robert) Owen of Bogart, GA, Joy (Justin) Kirchhoff of Dakota City, Jolyn (Keith) Garner of Fountain Hills, AZ, James J. Goodell of Des Moines, Joel (Cindy) Goodell of Humboldt, Thomas (Judy Blank) Sawyer of Des Moines, Michael (Renee) Sawyer of Des Moines, Linda (Steve) Lipkin of Kalamazoo, MI, Susan (Fred) Villalobos of Des Moines, Sandra Sawyer of Des Moines, and Heidi (Adam) Wicks of Des Moines; 24 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin Lovrien and Grace Lovrien Fleming; husband, Harold Sawyer; great-grandchildren, Matt Conlan and Samantha Sawyer; brothers, Howard, Cyril, and Carval Lovrien; and sisters, Marcella McKinney and Leona Dotts.
Arlene Opal Lovrien was born May 3, 1910 at Humboldt, Iowa where she was raised and educated. She was united in marriage to Harold Sawyer on December 24, 1930 at Rolfe, Iowa. The couple made their home at Dakota City where Arlene was busy as a homemaker raising her son and daughter. She was later employed in Ora’s Dress Shop in Humboldt where she enjoyed designing the windows and displays. Mr. Sawyer passed away in March of 1981 and Arlene continued to maintain her home in Dakota City until moving to Humboldt. She became a resident of the Humboldt Care Center North in April of 2004. She passed away there in the morning of November 14, 2008 at the age of 98.
Mrs. Sawyer was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church where she had been active in ladies aid in her younger years. She enjoyed flower arranging and decorating and was a member of the Garden Club. She also enjoyed reading, music, and dances with Harold. She was very proud of her grandchildren whom she loved very much.
