Berdine Therman Nygaard, the son of Christ and Lizzie (Roalstad) Nygaard, was born March 31, 1919 on a farm south and east of Badger, Iowa.  He moved with his parents to a farm southeast of LuVerne, Iowa in 1924 and received his education in the LuVerne School system graduating from LuVerne High School in 1937.  He worked on the family farm until entering the United States Army in August of 1942.  He served in the Army Air Corps with the 29th repair squadron in Townsville, Australia for 18 months and in the Philippines for one year.

Following his honorable discharge, Berdine returned home after the war and was united in marriage to Mabel Fortner of Humboldt in 1946.  To this union two children were born, Sharon Kay and Edwin.

Berdine began his farming operations in 1946 and farmed south of Livermore and in the LuVerne and Lake Mills areas until moving to Bode in 1957.  He enjoyed continuing to help on the farm following his retirement in 2001.

Berdine was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church at Livermore and was a member of the American Legion at Bode.  He enjoyed being a part of the card club in Bode, working on his home, and traveling with Mabel.  He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great granddaughters.
