Genevieve Berkhimer Miller, 96 of Humboldt passed away January 12, 2014 at the Humboldt Care Center South. Funeral services will be Friday January 17 at 11a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt, the Reverend Marie Paterik officiating. Visitation will be held at the Church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday before the service. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
Genevieve Berkhimer was born January 22, 1917 at the family home in Humboldt. She was the youngest of three children born to Nathan and Mollie (Chamberlin) Berkhimer. Genevieve grew up in Humboldt and was educated in the Humboldt public school system. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1935 with a normal training diploma. She started her career in education shortly afterward when she accepted a teaching position at Lake School number 7 in rural Humboldt County. She taught at several rural schools in the area before assuming the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Humboldt County in 1942. She worked with Frances Messer Lee Nefsger as they built the foundation for today’s Humboldt school system. Genevieve remained in that position until she completed her Bachelor of Science Degree through Drake University in August of 1965. She worked extremely hard to achieve this milestone in her life. After receiving her degree Genevieve taught in the Fort Dodge School District through 1970 including several years teaching 5th grade at Arey Elementary. On July 11, 1970 Genevieve married Leonard Miller at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. The couple moved to Pennsylvania where Genevieve did some substitute teaching. They returned to Humboldt in 1974. Leonard died in 1998. Genevieve lived in Humboldt the rest of her life.
Genevieve was an active member of The Congregational Church of Christ in Humboldt, the Humboldt County Historical Society, and Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary educational society. The Society presented her with the Ladybug Award in 1998 for her years of dedicated service and her special personality. She also served on the library board and a reading group through Chautauqua. Genevieve was a determined but gentle lady who valued education.
People remaining to cherish Genevieve’s memory include her sister Doris Callahan of Humboldt; stepsons William (Karen) Miller of Fort Collins, CO, Jerry Miller of Newman Lake, WA, and Rick (Kathy) Miller of Houston, TX; several step grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews including special nieces and nephew, Margaret (Butch) Ruble of Eldora, Judy (Steve) Olson of Humboldt, Mary Plathe of Humboldt, Doris (Roger) Joanning of Norwalk, and Terrence Dwyer of Fort Dodge. Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard, sister Maxine Dwyer, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Frank and Lois Mayall, and brother-in-law Maurice Callahan.
