Esther Ione Thompson

Esther Ione Thompson, 97, of Humboldt, passed away February 21, 2018 at Humboldt Care Center North. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Esther Ione Haas, the daughter of Jacob G. and Ava (Everhart) Haas, was born January 29, 1921 at Canton, South Dakota. She spent most of her childhood in South Dakota before moving with her family to Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was employed at Wilson’s Café and graduated from Fort Dodge High School. On July 27, 1940, she was united in marriage to Audrey Thompson at Webster City. Esther made her home in Fort Dodge and worked for Trelor’s Restaurant while Mr. Thompson served in the Second World War. Upon his return, they moved to Cedar Rapids until 1951 when they made their home on the family farm in Humboldt County. The couple farmed together for many years and after her children were raised, Esther worked for Helvick’s Drive-In, the bus station, and Montgomery Wards all in Humboldt.
Audrey passed away in May of 1985 and Esther moved into Humboldt where she was an active member of the Faith United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Ladies, Republican Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, and was active in 4-H and served as a County Committee Member in the Extension Office. She enjoyed her participation in the Silver Sisters, Women’s Improvement Club, and helped start the 500 RAMA group to benefit Humboldt Music Boosters. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers, keeping her red convertible clean, card playing, crocheting, and sewing.
Esther is survived by her children, Elaine (Bob) Thornton of Humboldt, Sue (Ramona Wink) Wilhite of Des Moines, and Ron (Meg) Thompson of Livermore; grandchildren, Connie Conboy, Jeff Merris, Kris Merris, Carrie Anderson, Virginia Kotarba, Crystal Hemesath, Carolyn Ersland, Tami Leonard, and Rebecca Barclift; 19 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Audrey; great grandson, Ryan; five sister; and two brothers.
