Gene Larson, the son of Lawrence and Gertrude (Romer) Larson, was born February 26, 1928 on a farm north of Badger, Iowa. During the depression, his father went to work for the WPA and the family made their home in Badger. Even before he was old enough to drive, Gene owned a car and rode in it with his sister to his job at Fort Dodge Tent and Awning. He then went to work as a painter for Coats Equipment before joining Al Chantland. He started with the Chantland Company at Badger as one of the first employees and moved with the company to Humboldt. He married Lorraine Kleveland in 1965 and the couple made their home in Badger before moving to the Kleveland Farm east of Humboldt. He left the Chantland Company after 19 years of service and joined The Hotsy Company until his retirement in 1978. In his retirement he continued farming. Lorraine passed away in 1984 and in 1985, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Jacobson and the couple continued to maintain their home on the farm.

Mr. Larson was a member of the Hauge Lutheran Church where he was active in Sunday School, Prayer Group, and Mission Work. An avid outdoorsman, Gene loved to run and began competing in 5K Races at the age of 57. An accomplished mountain climber, Gene put in and named his own routes in the Black Hills and at the age of 60, climbed the Devil’s Tower with his brother, Merle. He enjoyed woodworking, especially spinning wheels and children’s furniture and built his own house. He also enjoyed duck, goose, and deer hunting and fishing.

Those left to cherish Gene’s memory are his wife, Norma Jean Larson of Algona; brothers, Merle Larson of Badger and LeRoy (Janet) Larson of Custer, SD and Renwick; sister-in-law, Sylvie Larson of Thor; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Eugene Johnson; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence, Jr. “Bud” and Lorraine Larson; brother Leonard Larson; and his parents.
