Janice D. Strachan

April 16, 1942 — June 18, 2017

Janice D. Strachan, 75, of Humboldt, passed away June 18, 2017 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames after battling cancer over the last year. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt
Janice Darlene Silbaugh, the daughter of Paul and Eleanor (Klass) Silbaugh, was born April 16, 1942 on a farm in Greene County, Iowa. In 1943, the family moved to Humboldt where Janice was raised in the Congregational United Church of Christ. She attended Humboldt High School with the class of 1960 and following her education, married her high school sweetheart, Gary Strachan. The couple made their home in Ames while Gary attended Iowa State University before moving to Peoria, IL, Pittsburgh, PA, and Ida Grove, IA., They returned in 1975 to the family farm near Humboldt where she raised her children. In 1986, she worked as a teller at what became US Bank and remained until her retirement in 2004. Janice and Gary are members of the Faith United Methodist Church.
Over the years Janice served as a Sunday School Teacher, a Girl Scout and Brownie Leader, a school volunteer, and as the treasurer of the Humboldt Library Foundation. She enjoyed crafts and reading, spending summers in her pool, and winters walking on the beach in Carlsbad, CA. She loved the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Janice is survived by her husband, Gary Strachan of Humboldt; children, Sonya (Ted) Kassel of Forest Lake, MN, Scott (Janet) Strachan of Ankeny, and Shannon (Mharlowe) Abuan of Temecula, CA; grandchildren, James Kassel, Ellen Kassel, Jeremy (Megan) Strachan, Andy (Hannah) Strachan, Becca (Jared) Dietz, and Ryan and Aidan Abuan; great grandchildren, Tyler and Sophia Strachan, and Hunter Strachan; sisters, Juanita Skow of Humboldt and Paula (Merle) Smith of Martinez, GA; brothers, Ron (Terry) Silbaugh of Humboldt and Norman (Kim) Silbaugh of Gillette, WY; sister-in-law, Barb (Lew) Giesking of Menomonie, WI; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Eleanor Silbaugh; infant sister, Jeanette Silbaugh; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lyle and Edith Strachan; and brother-in-law, Butch Skow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be donated by the family in her honor to the Bliss Cancer Center at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.
