Jean M. Wellen, 86, of Humboldt, passed away October 4, 2014 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Fr. James Tigges, will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. A parish rosary will be at 4:45 and parish scripture service at 7:30, Wednesday at the funeral home.
Jean is survived by her children, Susan (Doug) DeSmidt of Venice, FL, Dennis Wellen of Louisville, CO, and Nancy (Ed) Rivers of Charlottesville, VA; Grandchildren, Diana (Tim) Taylor of Charleston, IL, David (Debbie) DeSmidt of Cedar Rapids, IA, Jessica (Lew) Harstead of Boulder, CO, and Chris Rivers of Charlottesville, VA; great grandchildren, Hanna and Quinn Taylor, Jackson, Matthew, and Thomas Harstead, and Drew, Dylan, and Daryn DeSmidt. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale; daughter-in-law, Mary Wellen; brothers, Cliff, Paul, and Don Meyers; and sisters, Althea Meyer, Mary “Kay” Coffman, Margaret Williams, and Ellen Barmore.
Jean Marie Meyer, the daughter of George Edward and Ella C. (Lahiff) Meyer, was born March 15, 1928 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was raised at Clare, Iowa where she attended school at St. Matthew’s, graduating in 1945. Jean was employed with the State Bank in Fort Dodge until 1947. She was united in marriage to Dale Arthur Wellen on April 23, 1947 at Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge. The couple established their home on a farm south of Humboldt where they raised their three children. In 1971, Jean began working in quality control at Farm Egg until her retirement in 1987 after 16 years of service. Mr. Wellen passed away in 1996 and Jean soon moved to Humboldt. In December of 2011, Jean became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. She passed away there on the morning of October 4, 2014 at the age of 86.
Jean was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and active in St. Mary’s Society. She cherished the time she spent with her family and friends and enjoyed her fellow residents and appreciated the care she received from the staff of Long Term Care. Memorials may be made to LTC at the hospital or Hospice.
