Lawrence Gene Monson

Lawrence G. Monson, 87, of Humboldt, formerly of Bode, went to be with the Lord on December 13, 2014 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Memorial services will be held in the spring. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, Bode.
Mr. Monson is survived by his wife, Jean of Humboldt; daughters, Valerie Monson of Maui, HI, and Betsy Roberts and partner, Ron Meyers of Dows, IA; his son, Kevin Monson of Tampa, FL; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Russell, Grant, Millard, Jr., Ada Marie, and Ruth Ann.
Lawrence Gene Monson, the son of Millard DeLloyd and Anna R. (Lansing) Monson, was born the fifth of six children on August 14, 1927 in Bode, Iowa. As a child, the family moved to Barnum where Lawrence received his education and was known as “Brother Monson”. He entered the United States Navy on June 20, 1945 and served until August 1, 1946.
He was united in marriage to Lou Jean Painter on her 18th birthday, June 24, 1950 in Webster City. To this union, three children were born, Valerie, Betsy, and Kevin.
Larry was employed at Fareway in Webster City and as Assistant Manager of Fareway in Washington, Iowa. In 1961, the family moved to Bode to help his uncle Art Monson in the family grocery Store. He took over the business in 1962 and owned and operated it until his retirement in 1985.
The loves of Larry’s life were his faith, his family, and golfing with his wife, Jean. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode and the Bode American Legion.
