Merland G. Cody, 92, of Humboldt, passed away January 15, 2011 at the Humboldt Care Center North.  Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Mr. Cody is survived by his wife, Floy of Humboldt; daughter, Gloria (Ted) Baumgartner of Athens, MO; son, W. Scott (Sue) Cody of Owatonna, MN; grandchildren, Paula and Karla Baumgartner, Beth, Matt and Drew Cody; and his brother, Eugene (Virginia) Cody of Beaverton, OR.   His parents; sisters, Carol Brown and Beulah Terwilliger; and his brother, Robert Cody, preceded him in death.
Merland Glen Cody, the son of Walter and Mae (Kincade) Cody, was born June 3, 1918 at Humboldt, Iowa.  He received his education at Humboldt and was employed in DeGroote's Grocery Store.  He was united in marriage to Floy Cooper on June 27, 1940 and Merland went to work for Supreme Bread during the war.  The couple then moved to Des Moines where he managed a Ben Franklin Store until 1944 when he and Floy along with Harold DeGroote purchased the Corner Store at LuVerne.  In January of 1951, the couple moved to Humboldt where they purchased Foodland, which became Cody’s Market and Old House of Values.  He owned and operated that until 1970 when he sold the business to Fareway and purchased a grocery in Nevada for a short time.  He then entered the real estate business, working with Smith Realty until his retirement in 1980.

Merland was member of the Faith United Methodist Church.  He was also a 50-year member of the Humboldt Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star.  Merland served as past president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Real Estate board in Humboldt.  He was also a member of the Antique Car Club and enjoyed collecting antique clocks.
