Mildred M. Altman, 104, of Humboldt, passed away October 19, 2014 at theLong Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Baptist Church in Humboldt with Pastor Doug Wolter officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Mildred Mozell Hoffman was born August 29, 1910 in Boone, Iowa to Grant and Helen (Saunders) Hoffman. The family moved to a farm west of Rutland in Humboldt County in 1919.
Mildred was educated in South Valley Rural School and Rutland Junior High School. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1928. She then taught for eight years in Avery and Corinth Township rural schools.
Mildred was united in marriage to Jacob (Jack) Altman on December 18, 1935. They purchased a farm in Weaver Township and lived on the farm until 1977 when they retired to Humboldt.
Mildred is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Wilfred) McCreedy of Washington, and Mardell (Earling) Jacobson of Waseca, MN; her three sons, Douglas (Karen) Altman of Ankeny, Paul (Smitty) Altman of West Palm Beach, FL, and David (Sandra) Altman of Coon Rapids; 16 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Mildred is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Altman; her parents, Grant and Helen Hoffman; stepmother, Ida Hoffman; brother, Gordon Hoffman; sister, Hazel Nordstrum; step-brother, Berwin Throndsen; and step-sister, Deloris Steyer.
Mildred was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, the Rebekah Lodge since 1929, Unique Homemakers Club, Humboldt Hospital Axillary, and Humboldt-Dakota City Senior Citizens. She was a past 4-H leader, a member of Federated Study Club (RFOM), and Friendly Visitors of Humboldt County. In 1962, Mildred was chosen as a Master Homemaker of Iowa.
Mildred enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, islands off the United States, and several countries in Europe.
Her passion was playing card games, reading books, and watching sports on television. She spent time knitting slippers and stocking hats for her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
