Wayne T. Johnson, 85, of Dakota City, passed away October 6, 2012 at the Humboldt Care Center South. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday October 13, 2012 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt with full military honors by the Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240 and Adams American Legion Post 119. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Wayne is survived by his sons, Steven N. (Rose) Samuels of Humboldt, Bret A. (Faith) Johnson of Cameron, MO, and Dr. Todd C. (Dr. Noel) Johnson of Heath, TX; grandchildren, Michael L. (Lori) Samuels of Wylie, TX, Christian Johnson, a student at TCU in Texas, Brett A. Johnson II of Cameron, MO, Nicole M. Johnson of Heath, TX, and Chloe Johnson of Cameron, MO; and great granddaughter, Zoe M. Samuels of Wylie, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; and son, Dr. Thomas W. Samuels.
Wayne Thomas Johnson, the son of Culvert and Amelia “Millie” (Hinz) Johnson, was born December 9, 1926 at Livermore, Iowa. He graduated from Livermore High School and following his education, Wayne enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Philippines during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and attended Drake University in Des Moines.
Wayne owned and operated W.T. Johnson Construction in the Humboldt area where he served as a masonry contractor all of his working life. Wayne was especially proud of his work on the bell tower at City Hall and the HHS Foundation Wall in the high school cafeteria.
On February 3, 1956, Wayne was united in marriage to Betty Samuels at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Humboldt. The family made their home in Humboldt before moving to their acreage in the country and in 1989, they moved to Dakota City. Betty passed away in January of 2011 and in July, Wayne became a resident of the Humboldt Care Center South.
Wayne was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church where he served on the building committee, and the Sathers-Odgaard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240.
