Donald Loar

Donald Loar, 86, of Thor, passed away April 7, 2018 at the Paula Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 11 am Monday, April 9, 2018, in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt with full military rites by Adams American Legion Post 119 and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240. Visitation is from 10-11 am Monday at the funeral home.
Donald Loar, the son of Clarence and Mildred (Thielhorn) Loar, was born September 16, 1931 at Humboldt, Iowa where he was raised and educated. Don joined his father in the family printing business and also owned and operated a bait and tackle shop in Humboldt. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Lehman and to this union thier daughter, Annette was born. The marriage was later dissolved. Don served in the United States Army during the Korean War and following his basic training, was assigned to help train new recruits at Fort Bliss in Texas. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to Humboldt.
Don was a self made man and a born salesman. He worked for Nestle selling fund raising candy to schools and organizations, managed a Payless Shoe Store and owned and operated an old time photo business. In recent years until his death, Don owned and operated a kettle corn business, selling his famous kettle corn at fairs and public gatherings. In 1995 he was united in marriage to Virginia Wagner in Hawaii and the couple made their home in Thor. Virginia passed away in 2009 and Don continued to maintain his home in Thor.
Don is survived by his daughter, Annette (Greg) Kanies; grandson, Scott Selby; and great grandchildren, Erika and Anthony Selby. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Jeanette and Virginia; his sister, Phyllis Johnston; and an uncle, Chuck Loar.
