Dorothy Dodgen

d. October 24, 2014

Dorothy Dodgen, 87, of Humboldt, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on October 24, 2014.  Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. October 27th with visitation one hour prior to the service at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt.  Arrangements are being handled by the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt.

Dorothy Marie Armstrong, daughter of Percy and Elsie (Springborg) Armstrong was born December 29, 1926 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  She graduated from high school there in 1945 and attended Fort Dodge Junior College. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Joe W. Dodgen on August 11, 1946 after he completed his service in the Naval Air Corps at the end of WWII. To this union they were blessed with a daughter and two sons.

Initially making their residence in Fort Dodge, they later moved to Sioux City, IA with Joe’s business.  Following a return to Fort Dodge, the family moved to Boston, MA in 1958 for two years while Joe attended The Harvard Graduate School of Business. After returning to Fort Dodge for two more years, Joe’s family business, Dodgen Industries, and his family moved to Humboldt in 1962.

Dorothy’s life was dedicated to raising her children as well as attending and hosting business functions with her husband.  She enjoyed modeling for Svana’s and other women’s apparel stores in Fort Dodge, singing with both the Fort Dodge and Humboldt Community Choruses, gardening, shopping and cross-stitching baby quilts for her grandchildren and those of numerous friends.  Dorothy was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and was a 50 year member of P.E.O.   As a young family, vacations were often taken to Colorado to visit brother and sister-in-law, James and Della Mae Kennedy. Later in life, she and Joe enjoyed spending summers with friends at Lake Okoboji. After Joe’s death in 1995, she enjoyed the winter months in Florida with her sister Yvonne and her husband Bob.

Dorothy maintained her home in Humboldt until moving to Springvale Senior Living in 2011 and then to Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care where she was blessed with a peaceful passing on October 24, 2014 at the age of 87.  Dorothy’s greatest joy truly was being a wife and mother and in later years, “Gram” to her grandchildren.
