Dorothy Mekemson, 83, of Humboldt, passed away November 7, 2011 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Walden Paige and Rev. Josh Swaim officiating.  Interment will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt.  Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Dorothy Mae Brown, the daughter of Harry J. Brown and Lora Elsie (Griggs) Brown, was born June 27, 1928, at Emmetsburg, Iowa.  She was the second of four children and was raised and educated in Emmetsburg.  Dorothy attended Iowa State Teachers College, which later became UNI, and received her teaching degree.  She first taught school at Ottosen before moving to Milford, where she met a fellow teacher, William Brown Mekemson.  The couple was united in marriage on December 23, 1951, and to this union one daughter and three sons were born.  Bill’s teaching career took the family to the communities of Estherville, Havelock, Pocahontas, and eventually Humboldt.  After her children had grown, Dorothy returned to teaching as a long-term substitute in the Humboldt School district.

Dorothy was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, where she was active in UMW.  She enjoyed using her teaching skills to help Tai Dam refugees to master the English language.  In later years, Dorothy and Bill enjoyed their travels together on cruises to many parts of the globe.    Dorothy enjoyed many lifelong friendships.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, William B. Mekemson of Humboldt; children, Mary Mekemson and her husband, Robert S. Baker of Madison, Wisconsin; William Brown Mekemson and his wife, Mary Frances Mekemson of Ames; Paul Randall Mekemson of Dakota City; and Joseph Gilbert Mekemson of Des Moines; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Mekemson Baker of Madison, WI, currently enrolled in Earlham College in Richmond, IN; Amy Mekemson of Des Moines, Will Mekemson of Ho Chi Minh [Saigon], Vietnam, and Michelle Mekemson of Ames; and her sister, Edith O’Morrow of Fort Wayne, IN.  She was preceded in death by her parents; sister,  Marjorie Agar; and brother, Willard “Bud” Brown.
