Edward "Bud" Gates

Edward L. (Bud) Gates, 86, of rural Renwick, passed away June 26, 2017 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2017, at Lake Lutheran Church near Renwick. Burial will be in Lake Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Bud is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughter, Becky Vorland and husband Kenneth of Humboldt; son, Bob Gates and wife Susie of Adel; twin sister, Edwina Leila Gates Nichter of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren, Brandon (Michelle) Vorland, Clayton (Sierra) Vorland, and Daphne, Sydney, and Lucy Gates; great grandchildren, Ryerson, Kahler, and Mila Vorland and Lexi and Lincoln Vorland; nephews, Larry (Pam) Baldwin of Chesapeake, VA, and Neff McClary of McLean, VA; great nephew, Matthew Baldwin; great nieces, Kimberly (Phillip) Goering and Jennifer (Chris) Harper; great-grandnephews, Tristan, Parker and Camden Goering, and Matthew Harper; and great-grandniece, Grace Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Hazel Claire Gates McClary; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Baldwin, Joseph Sullivan, and Frank Nichter.
Edward L. (Bud) Gates, Jr., and his twin sister, Edwina Leila Gates, were born October 9, 1930, to Edward Leroy Gates, Sr. and Hazel Rivers Simmons Gates, in Jackson, Mississippi. He moved with his family in June of 1934 to Fort Peck, Montana, in February of 1936 to Conchas Dam, New Mexico, and in February of 1940 to Alexandria, Virginia. He was a member of the Washington Street Methodist Church. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1947. He attended Roanoke College, Georgia Tech, and the University of North Carolina, graduating in 1955. He worked at Equitable Life Insurance Company in Washington D.C., where he met and married Beverly Heggen in 1959 and joined the Lutheran Church. He then worked for Peoples Life Insurance Company.
In 1973, he, his wife, and their two children moved to Goldfield, Iowa to purchase Beverly’s family farm. He worked for C&R Buick in Clarion, Giese Construction, Eagle Grove, and Job Service of Iowa in Clarion and Fort Dodge. He then joined Meredith Corporation in Clarion as Personnel Manager in 1980. While in Clarion he was president of the Rotary Club, the Clarion Chamber of Commerce, the Clarion area Development Commission, and Chairman of the Festival in the Park. He farmed from 1977 to 1989.
He was a member of Lake Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, Trustee, Church Treasurer, Church Secretary, Financial Secretary, and Cemetery Sexton.
In 1992, he retired from Meredith Corporation and continued to live on the farm.
Memorials will be made to Hospice and Lake Lutheran Church.
