Edward James Nervig

Edward J. Nervig, 87, of Humboldt, passed away September 6, 2015 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 9th, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Gene Broughton officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery at Hardy with full military rites by Adams American Legion Post 119 and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.

Edward James Nervig, the son of Omen and Irma Nervig, was born August 16, 1928 on the family farm near Hardy, Iowa. He attended country school and graduated from Renwick High School in 1946. He attended Waldorf College before returning home to farm. On August 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Joyce Anderson and the couple made their home on the Nervig Family farm. Ed served with the United States Army in Korea during the Korean War, returning home after his honorable discharge. In 1983, the couple moved to Humboldt and in 1993, Ed retired from farming. In January of this year, Ed and Joyce made their home at Springvale.
Mr. Nervig was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Hardy and more recently Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. He was active in Stephen’s Ministry and was involved in after care for prison ministries. Ed served as a Gideon and enjoyed nursing home visits. He worked for a time for the ASCS and served on the FHA Board. He enjoyed golf, reading, and playing cribbage with Joyce. He served as an inspiration for his grandchildren and took great pride in his participation in the 2013 Honor Flight.

Mr. Nervig is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce Nervig of Humboldt; his children, Richard “Rick” (Deanna) Nervig of Hardy, Nancy (Dr. Walter) Bender of Kansas City, MO, and David (Janice) Nervig of Hastings, NE; grandchildren, Jenna Nervig, Matthew Nervig, Amy (Matthew) Carda, Joshua (Gina) Lindell, Erica (Ryan) Barbosa, Joy (Dr. Gabe) Johnson, and James (Audrey) Nervig; step grandchildren, Megan (John) Boyd, Dr. Matthew Bender, Brady Bender, and Julie Bender; great grandchildren, Zoey, Brody, Hayden, Micah, and Caroline; and his brother, Stanley (Joyce) Nervig of Marcus. His parents preceded him in death.
