Faye C. Carter, 95, of Humboldt, passed away December 31, 2011 at the Humboldt Care Center North.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt.  Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday (today) at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.

Faye was born August 3, 1916 in Rhodes, Iowa to parents Clifford and India Marie (DeReus) Emery.  She grew up in Mingo, Iowa and was graduated from Mingo High School where she participated in the girls’ basketball program.

After high school she worked in Ames, Iowa in a photographic studio where she met her future husband when he came in to have a photograph taken.  She married Guy L. Carter on September 12, 1941 in Colfax, Iowa.  After Guy was discharged from the army in 1946, they moved to Humboldt, Iowa.  Guy was a science, chemistry and physics teacher in Humboldt High School for 34 years.  Faye and Guy had three children: Ellen Carter of Columbus, Ohio; Philip (Dona) Carter of Geneseo, Illinois; and Jane (Terry) Kounkel of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Faye and Guy attended Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt where Faye was very active in her church circle and on many various committees.  She started a group called Understanding Sisters, a widows support group.  She was a member of the PEO Sorority, and The Red Hat Society.

Faye was an artist and enjoyed sponge painting, oil painting, and creating beautiful stitcheries.  She had an owl collection, which numbered nearly 200.  She was also an avid reader.

Faye was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Guy; her sisters, Velma Wall and Myrtle Walker; and her brothers, Leroy and Gerald Emery.  She is survived by one brother, Donald Emery of Drexel, Missouri.

Faye is also survived by her three children; seven grandchildren, Ayn Thoreson of Sprit Lake, Iowa, Matthew (Courtney) Kounkel of Overland Park, Kansas, Jon (Barb) Kounkel of North Liberty, Iowa, Lisa (Jamie) Wahle of Dallas, Georgia, Sara Beanblossom of Indianapolis, Indiana, Ryan (Liz) Carter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Paula Carter of Chicago, Illinois; and eleven great-grandchildren.
