Gerald Schulze

July 20, 1933 — April 13, 2018

Gerald Schulze, 84, of Humboldt, passed away April 13, 2018 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt with full military rites by Adams American Legion Post 119 and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Gerald is survived by his eight sons, Mike Schulze of Grinnell, Dale Schulze of Des Moines, Dennis Schulze of Marengo, Mitch Schulze of Indianola, Jerry Schulze of Council Bluffs, Kevin Schulze of Huxley, Robert Humpal of Mills, WY, and Bill Humpal of Torrance, CA; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Wanda Schulze of Humboldt and Phyllis Schulze of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Inez, and brother, Jack Schulze.
Gerald Schulze, the son of Theodore and Ilda (Tinken) Schulze, was born July 20, 1933 at Pontiac, Michigan. Following the death of his mother, his uncle, Clint Tinken raised Gerald in Humboldt. Following his education, Gerald joined the National Guard then was inducted into the United States Army. He received his basic training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin and served in Germany during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in 1952, he made his home in Missouri before returning to Humboldt.
Gerald went to work for the Council Oak Store before moving to California where he continued his work in the grocery business. In 1965, he once again returned to Humboldt and in 1968, he was united in marriage to Inez. Combined, the family had 8 sons and they made their home in Humboldt. Gerald’s work included managing a bowling alley in Humboldt and Fort Dodge, served as a reserve police officer and a member of the volunteer fire department in Humboldt, and owned and operated Jerry’s Pool Hall in Humboldt. He then worked for New Idea in Fort Dodge and Sliefer Manufacturing before going to work for Jet Co. until his retirement. Inez passed away in 1998 and in 2001, he met Lois Engeman and the couple enjoyed each other’s company until Gerald’s death.
Mr. Schulze was a 75-year member of the Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing and loved to square dance with Inez and the Boot Scooters. He enjoyed his time umpiring adult softball games and loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.
