Gertrude “Gertie” Fort, 101, of Humboldt, passed away May 16, 2010 at her home in Humboldt.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt.  Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt.  Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday (Today) at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Mrs. Fort is survived by her children, Sharon (Durwood “Doc”) Giddings of Humboldt, Billy (Linda) Fort of Dakota City, and Robert Fort of Humboldt; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great -great grandchild; and her sister, Grace Junger of North Dakota.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy; and nine brothers and sisters.
Gertrude Swanson, the daughter of Frank and Selma (Larson) Swanson, was born the eighth of eleven children on December 31, 1908 on a farm near East Chain, Minnesota.  She was raised at East Chain and received her education there.  As a young woman, Gertrude was employed as domestic help at the Smeltzer house in Fort Dodge.  It was in Fort Dodge that she met Roy Robert Fort.  The couple was united in marriage in a double ceremony with her brother in Webster City in 1934.  The couple made their home in Humboldt County on the Sheldon farm for many years.  Gertie stayed busy as a homemaker and farm wife, tending her vegetable and flower gardens, raising chickens and collecting eggs.  In 1981, the couple retired from farming and made their home in Humboldt.  Mr. Fort passed away in 1987 and Gertie continued to maintain her home in Humboldt becoming a resident of Springvale in 2005.  She passed away there peacefully on the morning of May 15, 2010 at the age of 101.

Mrs. Fort was a life-long member of the Faith United Methodist Church, where she was the oldest member, and United Methodist Women.  She was a member of the OFA Club, the Hobby Club, the Rebecca’s, and the Flower and Garden Club.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church or Springvale Assisted Living.
