Gordon L. Laing, 79, of Humboldt, passed away Wednesday April 29, 2009 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Interment will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt with full military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240 and Adams American Legion Post 119. Visitation with the family will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Marjorie Laing of Humboldt; children, Mark (Pat) Laing of Humboldt, and Terri (Todd) Kipfer of Rolfe; grandchildren, Candi (Adam) Duckett of Fort dodge, and Nick Laing of Humboldt; and great-grandchildren, Lexi and Will Duckett. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janyce Anderson; and brothers, Jack and Richard Laing.
Gordon Laing, the son of Leo L. and Waynne (Layton) Laing, was born July 30, 1929 at Chariton, Iowa. At the age of three, Gordon moved with his family to Humboldt where he received his education. While in school, Gordon was employed in the Coca~Cola Bottling Plant during World War II and helped in his father’s auto repair business. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1949 and opened a service station in Humboldt. On February 12, 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on January 29, 1953 and returned home where he established Laing’s DX station in Dakota City. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Hampson on July 10, 1955 at the First Lutheran Church in Humboldt. The couple made their home at Humboldt where Gordon owned and operated the Skelly Station on the highway. He then started an automotive electrical repair business later adding a parts store and establishing Laing Auto Supply until his retirement in 1994.
Gordon was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240, Adams American Legion Post 119, and the Iowa Automotive Association where he had served as treasurer. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, fishing, and woodworking. He also enjoyed flying and at one time had part ownership of an airplane.
