Harold “Dean” Baugous

d. October 28, 2014

Harold “Dean” Baugous, known to many as the “Candyman” age 79, of Livermore, passed away October 28, 2014 at the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Des Moines.  Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt followed by a celebration of his life and military honors by the Otto-Field American Legion Post 415 of Livermore, Adams American Legion Post 119, and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240.

Harold Dean Baugous, the son of Earl and Amy (Fevold) Baugous, was born December 6, 1934 at Dakota City, Nebraska.  As a young boy he was sent to Humboldt County to live with his cousins, Ardell and Veda Fevold.  His parents later joined Dean and the family made their home at Pioneer.  Dean attended school in Weaver Township and graduated from Humboldt High School.  In 1952, he enlisted into the United States Navy and served during the Korean War.  Following his honorable discharge in 1955, he remained in the Naval Reserves until 1960.  In 1952, Dean married Diane Benson and the marriage was later dissolved.  Dean worked for the bakery in Fort Dodge, Universal Mfg. in Algona and for W&H Coop as a propane driver.  He then began his trucking career as an owner/operator with Brazos Transport, Umpthum Trucking, and Smithway Trucking until his retirement.  In 1974, he married Jeanie Cran and the marriage was later dissolved.

Dean was fiercely proud of his Naval service and was a long time member of the Otto-Field American Legion Post 415 of Livermore.  An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, feeding and watching birds.  He enjoyed tinkering in his shop and coffee with his friends at Hardees and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Indianapolis Colts.  Known around this area as the “Candyman”, Dean loved to pass out candy and share a smile.

Dean is survived by his children, Robin Baugous of Dixon, MO, Bruce Baugous of New Brownfield, TX, Amy Kahn of Portland, OR, Theresa Waechter of Algona, Harold Baugous of Bradgate, and Troy Dunn of Surprise, AZ; 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and his brother, Charles (Virginia) Baugous of Ankeny.   He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Mary Tilton and Marilyn Wood.
