Helen Ann Goodell

July 27, 1931 — August 6, 2022

Helen Ann Goodell, the daughter of Harold and Arlene (Lovrien) Sawyer, was born July 27, 1931, in Dakota City, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth graduating from Humboldt High School in 1949.

On March 12, 1950, Helen was united in marriage to James Goodell at First Lutheran Church in Humboldt. They made their home on a farm southwest of Humboldt where they raised seven children. Helen and James moved to Dakota City in 1990. She later moved to the Marion Home in Fort Dodge where she lived until her death.

Helen loved to garden, canning vegetables and growing flowers and she entered many in the Humboldt County Fair. Hostas were her favorite, growing several different varieties. She volunteered with the Humboldt County Historical Society and was a member of Garden Club and OFA. Helen loved painting art work, bird watching, dancing and her cats. She played the piano and taught lesson for many years.
Helen passed away Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Unity Point Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge at the age of 91 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James in 2015; sister-in-law, Ellen Sawyer, son-in-law's, Tim Conlan and Keith Garner, grandson, Matthew Conlan and infant twin grandchildren.

Helen is survived by her children: Jane and Tim Zabka of Leigh, Nebraska, Julie and Terry Austin of Ranger, Texas, Jill and Bob Owen of Watkinsville, Georgia, Joy and Justin Kirchhoff of Dakota City, Jolyn Garner of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Jay Goodell of Des Moines and Joel and Cindy Goodell of Humboldt; 12 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson, her brother, Kenneth Sawyer of Des Moines and her sister-in-law, Alice Goodell.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Humboldt. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements. www.masonlindhart.com
