Joel Christopher Newton, 35, of Humboldt, passed away January 7, 2014 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.  Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt.  The family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the church.  The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.

Joel Christopher Newton, the son of Jimmy and Janet (Wilson) Newton, was born on April 16, 1978 at Humboldt, Iowa.  His parents took him home to their farm near Bode where Joel was raised.  He received his education and graduated from Twin River Valley High School in 1996.  He attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg before transferring to Northwest Missouri State University where he graduated with a degree in Animal Science.  He returned to Humboldt County and was employed by Pro Cooperative in Bradgate, then Farmers Cooperative in Ottosen as a Seed Sales Specialist.  On May 28, 2011, he was united in marriage to Jill Marie Williamson at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove and the couple made their home in Humboldt.

Joel was an accomplished breeder of show pigs and took great pride in raising the Champion Cross Bred Gilt at the National Pork Expo in 2012.  A skilled golfer, Joel enjoyed his time spent at Spring Valley Golf Course and also enjoyed gambling trips taken with friends and family.  He was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan and a past member of the Humboldt County Fair Board. As a tissue donor, Joel will help countless people through his gift to the Iowa Donor Network.

Joel is survived by his wife, Jill Newton of Humboldt; his parents, Jim and Jan Newton of Bode; his brother and his family, Jay and Suzanne Newton and Owen, Levi, and Ava of Gilmore City; his sister and her family, Jill and Jason Santee and Piper of Coralville; mother and father-in-law, Raymond and Jane Willliamson of Eagle Grove; brother-in-law and his family, Kurtis and Emily Williamson and Dylan and Kaden of Altoona.  He is also survived by Jill’s grandmothers, Margaret Williamson and Leola Asche; great grandmother, Myrtle Reed; and great Aunt, Eileen Reed along with his aunts, uncles, cousins, and the many friends he made through hog production, school, sales, golf, and work.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Devere and Millie Newton, and Leonard and Marjorie Wilson; his uncle, Jerry Newton; and his aunt, Gayle Wilson Foth.

In lieu of flowers, the Newton family will use memorials to benefit the causes that were important to Joel.
