John M. Kubly

February 10, 1945 — December 9, 2020

John Melvin Kubly, age 20 (okay actually 75, but acted and always said he felt 20), passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 in Zephyrhills, Florida.

John was born on February 10, 1945, in Algona, Iowa, to Melvin “Bud” and Ethel “Jane” (Johnson) Kubly. He grew up in LuVerne and fondly talked about his early Vernon School time and classmates. He graduated from the LuVerne High School in 1963 and afterwards spent time in Minnesota and in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, where he was a proud member of the Iowa National Guard. He soon moved back to LuVerne where he spent most of his remaining life.

John was united in marriage to Sherry Rae Lenning on August 21, 1966 in Humboldt to which four children were born. After Sherry’s tragic death in 2001, he later married Linda Elaine Benjamin in Humboldt on November 29, 2003. John continued wintering in Florida after Linda passed from cancer in 2014, where he met Sheryl “Sherry” Poulnot and married on September 2, 2016 in Thonotosassa, Florida. (Yes, he was quite the ladies’ man and was blessed with three wonderful women to share his life with!)

To say John was a hard worker would be an understatement. He owned his own construction company for years and later with his son, Tony, and had quite the sense of perfectionism. He farmed for most of his life and although he was “retired” from it, he continued helping Tony with the operation. He affectionately credited his grandparents, Frank and Vernice Johnson, and father-figure, Andrew Marty, for his success in farming.

John always had a big smile on his face and a zest for life. Although he walked too fast for anybody to keep up with him, you could always hear him whistling, usually to the tune of a favorite gospel hymnal. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and anything racing, which he will be remembered for his generosity of racing sponsorships and recently becoming a 2020 Inductee to the Kossuth County Racing Hall of Fame. Above all, he will be forever remembered for his sense of humor and devotion to his children and grandchildren. He didn’t miss an event, including school concerts and sporting events, and often traveled to and from Florida to make that happen.

John is survived by his wife, Sherry Poulnot Kubly of Zephyrhills, FL; children, Tony (and friend Erika Rodriguez) Kubly of Kanawha, Tami (Dana) Wingert of Des Moines, Tina (Lyle) Schlemme of Iowa Falls, and Tom (Jennifer) Kubly of Littleton, CO; nine grandchildren, Andrew (and friend Leslie) Kubly of Atlanta, GA, Kaitlin Kubly of Murfreesboro, TN, Madison Kubly of Iowa City, Brandon Wingert of Des Moines, Levi Wingert of Des Moines, Taylor Wingert of Denver, CO, and Alexa, Olivia and Devin Schlemme of Iowa Falls; brother, Larry (Carol) Kubly of Edgewood, and sister, Linda (Marv) Meyer of Humboldt. He is also survived by canine sidekick and travel buddy, Winston; stepdaughter, Allison Laiosa and step-granddaughter, Ella Laiosa, both of Plant City, FL; and many nieces and nephews and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives Sherry and Linda; nephew, Brian Meyer; and several in-laws.
