Joseph "Joe" Vanderhoff

March 31, 1955 — December 26, 2021

Joseph William Vanderhoff, 66, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on December 26, 2021, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge.

Joe was born March 31, 1955, to Vincent and Lucille (Grice) Vanderhoff on the family farm in rural Gilmore City. He spent his childhood in Gilmore City, attended St. John’s Catholic School, and graduated from Gilmore City–Bradgate in 1974. On September 3, 1977, Joe married Ellen Hauck from Humboldt. Joe studied masonry at Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Washington, before returning to Iowa. He and Ellen made their home in Dakota City, where they raised their two children, Erika and Aaron. Joe spent the majority of his career working as a certified welder at Chantland Mfg. until his cancer diagnosis in 2017. His favorite thing to do was spend time with his family, especially his four grandkids, Morgan, Van, Harper, and Sylvie. Joe and Ellen loved to travel: Joe made it to 49 of the 50 states. (Alaska was the last one on the list.) He enjoyed exploring national parks and museums with his family, attending car shows with his grandson, watching and attending NASCAR races, and cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones. He also liked going for drives, playing golf with his brother and friends, and low-stakes sports betting with his brother-in-law.

Joe is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ellen; children Erika (John) Hansen and Aaron (Carrie) Vanderhoff; grandchildren Morgan, Van, and Harper Hansen and Sylvia Vanderhoff; siblings Frank Vanderhoff, Cathy (Lynn) Bendixen, Mary (Bill) Dawson, Fred (Marsha) Vanderhoff, and Matt Vanderhoff; sisters-in-law Louise (Larry) Hauck-Chinn, Phyllis (Joe) Gehring and Peg Vanderhoff; brother-in-law Herman (Jana) Hauck; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Patrick, Eddie, and Michael; sister Jane Fawcett; brother-in-law Michael Fawcett; and sister-in-law Sandra Vanderhoff.
