Kenneth D. Hanson, 90, of Rutland, died November 16, 2014 at the Humboldt Care Center South. Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. Saturday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt followed by burial in Norway Lake Township Cemetery near Thor at 1:30 p.m. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Ona Hanson of Rutland; children, Laurie (Frank) Der of Cocoa, FL, LeeAnn (Mark) Daggy of Des Moines, Kirk Hanson of Fort Dodge, and Lona Hanson-Wilson of Humboldt; 18 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Merle “Bernie” Hanson; 5 sisters; and 4 brothers.

Kenneth D. Hanson was born July 9, 1924 at Duncombe, Iowa to Peter and Isabell Hanson. He received his education in a country school then graduated from Goldfield High School where he pitched for the baseball team, including 2 no-hitters; served as president of his class; and graduated Salutatorian of his class. Following his education, Ken began farming with his father and brothers raising purebred Hampshire Hogs that they were very proud of. Kenneth, along with his brothers, enlisted in to the United States Army during World War II. One brother was killed in action and one brother was wounded in a gas attack.
On April 29, 1951, Kenneth was united in marriage to Ona Tubbs at the United Methodist Church in Rutland. They lived at Thor before moving to Bradgate then to Rutland farming the same farm for over 40 years and raised Hogs and cattle. They retired in Rutland.

Kenneth served as a 4-H leader at Thor, taught Sunday School at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, and pitched for the Thor Cardinals baseball team. He enjoyed square dancing and polka dancing with Ona and watching high school and college wrestling and baseball games. He loved playing with and baby-sitting for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice, Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240, or Adams American Legion Post 119.
