Kenneth R. Nelson

November 13, 1931 — June 19, 2022

Kenneth Robert Nelson, the son of Soren “Sam” and Maren “Mary” (Larsen) Nelson, was born November 13, 1931 on a farm in Beaver Township in rural Humboldt County, Iowa. After high school he was drafted into the United States Army serving as an MP at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

On June 30, 1953, Kenneth was united in marriage to Phyllis Hellickson at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Kenneth returned to Humboldt County where he farmed in Beaver Township for many years.

Kenneth worked at Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge as an orderly for several years and later at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. As one of 15 children he was very family oriented. Kenneth and Phyllis were never blessed with children of their own, but he was loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
Kenny had numerous hobbies including crocheting and knitting afghans, was an accomplished baker and had a love for music and was self-taught to play the organ. He also loved animals and while living on the farm always had a faithful dog, cats and a pony. Kenny enjoyed his birds and cockatiel but most of all his beloved three dogs, Mindy, Skeezics and Sugar who were part of the family.

Kenneth and Phyllis enjoyed traveling, taking many trips with family and friends to Colorado, Hawaii and Missouri. He was a member of the Congregational UCC in Humboldt where he volunteered with many tasks and projects, namely folding numerous church bulletins over the years.

Kenneth passed away Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Humboldt Care Center North at the age of 90 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his of wife of 60 years, Phyllis in 2017; mother-in-law, Bernice; brothers: Marvin, Russell, Harley Madsen, Norman, Sam Jr, and Merlin; sisters: Elnora Nelson, Verena McDowell Streaver, Bernice Kleve, Arlene Sherman and Marilyn Wingerson and three siblings: Edwin, Alvin and Wilma who died in infancy.

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters-in-law, Marion Nelson of Fort Dodge and Rosemary White of Kanawha; brother-in-law, Harold Wingerson of Fort Dodge and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2022, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Humboldt. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service of Humboldt is in charge of the arrangements. www.masonlindhart.com
