Kermit “Gene” Johnson, 86, of Humboldt, passed away June 4, 2008 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2008 in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Blossom Hill Cemetery, Badger with full military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240 and Adams American Legion Post 119.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Alice Johnson of Humboldt; daughters, Linda (Will) Kesler of Forest City, and Susan (Rob) Jennings of Ames; grandchildren, Mark Jennings of Des Moines, Jeremy (Amanda) Jennings of Ames, and Matthew Torkelson of Thompson; and great grandchildren, Jack Jennings and Ryder Torkelson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jesse Johnson; sister, Amy Opheim; and two infant sisters.
Kermit Eugene Johnson, the son of James and Bertha (Stensland) Johnson, was born December 29, 1921 on the family farm in Beaver Township, Humboldt County. He received his education in Beaver Township Country Schools and following his education, worked as a welder and blacksmith with his cousin Leonard Johnson. Gene served in the pacific Theater with the United States Army during World War II, stationed in the Philippines. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and five days later on January 21, 1946, married his childhood sweetheart, Alice Larson in Fort Dodge. The couple made their home on the family farm in Beaver Township. In addition to farming, Gene was also employed in factory work and as a carpenter fro many years. Following the couple’s retirement, Gene remained active woodworking in his shop. He became a resident of the Humboldt Care Center South in October of 2006 and in July of 2007 made his home at North Care. He passed away there on the evening of June 4, 2008 at the age of 86. Gene enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
