M. Elizabeth “Babe” Johnson, 94, of Humboldt, passed away April 10, 2013 at the Humboldt Care Center North. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt.
Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation for Mrs. Johnson will be today (Friday) from 5-7 p.m. with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. M. Elizabeth ”Babe” Johnson was born November 13, 1918 in a farmhouse in Hand County, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Arthur and Myrtle (Stegmire) Johnson.
She attended country school in Hand County before moving to Miller, South Dakota, where she met her husband Thomas Herald Johnson. On July 12, 1938 they were married in Blue Earth, Minnesota. They lived briefly in Livermore and Dakota City, Iowa before making their lifelong home in Humboldt. Elizabeth spent many years working as a nurse’s assistant in a long-term care facility. She had a sincere devotion for the care of the elderly.
Even upon her retirement she continued to accompany residents to medical appointments. Elizabeth was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt. She was an active member of the Humboldt Senior Center and served on the board. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, crocheting, and baking. She was especially well known for her caramel rolls and chicken noodle soup.
Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Left to cherish her memory are her three sons, James “Jim” Johnson and his wife, Virginia of Humboldt, Jerald “Jerry” Johnson and his wife, Jeanette of Humboldt, and Thomas “Tom” Johnson and his wife, Janice of West Okoboji, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Jennifer (Gary) Reed, Lauri (Wade) Hinners, Dr. Chris (Alecia) Johnson, Monica (Dan) Sheely, Jeff (Pam) Johnson, Lisa (Chuck) Thompson, Derek (Dana) Johnson, and Trevor (Fiancé, Lacey Heikens) Johnson. She is also survived by her 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Harold Johnson on February 18, 1984; and sisters, Ella Johnson and Nancy Melber.
