She was raised and educated at Livermore and graduated from Livermore High School with the class of 1950. Following her education, Marilyn moved to Washington DC to work for the FBI. She then returned and made her home at Humboldt where she went to work for the telephone company as a switchboard operator. She met Carl Hansen on a blind date and the couple was united in marriage on August 16, 1953. They made their homes in the communities of Manson, Grinnell, and Estherville where Carl served as a schoolteacher. In 1973, he accepted a teaching position in Humboldt and Marilyn went to work for the First National and Hawkeye Bank until her retirement in 1993. Mr. Hansen passed away in 2010 and Marilyn continued to maintain her home until her death.

Marilyn was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women, a 50-year member of the DAR, and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and quilting group. She loved her family and enjoyed keeping up with them on Facebook. She loved baking for family and church functions and her family will always remember her as a wonderful cook. She especially enjoyed attending the Saturday morning retired teachers group at Hardees.
