Marjorie O. Vance, 98, of Humboldt, passed away November 4, 2014 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Christy Ehrle officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt.

Marjorie Olive DeGroote was born to Forrest O. and Jennie (Johnson) DeGroote on October 30. 1916 and was raised north of Rutland, Iowa. She graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1934 and taught in rural school for one year. She married Royal Edwin Bennett in 1935. Mr. Bennett passed away in 1961. Marjorie worked for 15 years at the First National Bank in Humboldt. In 1969, she married Millard Vance. Mr. Vance passed away in 1983 and she continued to maintain her home in Humboldt until becoming a resident of the Humboldt Care Center North in February of 2007. She passed away there on the morning of October 4, 2014 at the age of 98.

Marjorie was a life member of the Faith United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was active in Humboldt Federated Women’s Club, the Humboldt County Historical Association, Senior Citizens, and Merry Menders Sewing Club. She was the first president of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a Senior Advocate for many years.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Janice (Bartholomew P.) Becker of Davenport; grandchildren, Cathy (Frank) Chambers, John (Tammy) Phillips, Dr. Royal M. (Reneé) Becker; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Valoyce Williams of Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Royal Bennett and Millard Vance; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Robert E. Phillips; and siblings, Douglas DeGroote, Sr., Arvin DeGroote, Charlotte Schafer, and Rita Abens.

Memorials may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church, the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital, or the Humboldt County Historical Association.
