Mary Claire Linnan, the daughter of Thomas and Ruth (Hillblink) Linnan, was born March 23, 1938 at La Mars, Iowa. Following the death of her father, the family relocated from their farm and settled in Eagle Grove when Mary was eight years old. Mary received her education at Eagle Grove and graduated with the class of 1956. She attended Clark College before transferring to the University of Iowa. It was while at the U of I that she met Jerry Knudsen who was also from Eagle Grove. The couple was united in marriage on October 24, 1959 at Eagle Grove. They made their home briefly in Iowa City before moving to Davenport. After three years, they returned to Eagle Grove then to Humboldt in 1968 where they established the family’s real estate business. After raising her 4 children, Mary took a position with the Fort Dodge Messenger. She then became the head of Adult Basic Education for Iowa Central Community College where she helped many adults attain their High school diploma. She retired in 2003.
Mary was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. She loved the time she spent with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She was a voracious reader and loved to discuss politics. She enjoyed her many book club friends and in later years, discovered the YMCA in Fort Dodge. She loved good food, prodigious shopping, and great shoes.
