Miles E. Holden

Miles Holden, 94, of Humboldt, passed away October 5, 2015 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt with full military honors by Adams American Legion Post 119 and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Miles E. Holden, the son of Oscar and Marie (Hansen) Holden, was born November 15, 1920 on a farm west of Bode, Iowa. He attended Maple Lawn Country School and graduated from Bode High School with the class of 1939. Following his graduation, Miles attended Iowa State College in Ames and St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He enlisted into the United States Army Reserves in 1942 and was called to active service in February of 1943. He was sent to the Army School of Surveying at the University of Kentucky at Lexington and after graduated, was sent to the Pacific Theater. He flew the “hump” into China and was assigned to command and general staff school in Kunming, China where he served as a mapmaker and draftsman. He attended the rank of Staff Sargent and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritious Service. Following his honorable discharge on November 6, 1945, he returned home. Miles worked for Lane Clothing Company before going to work for the Soil Conservation Service. In 1950, he was united in marriage to Georgette Lee. The couple farmed near Rutland until moving to Humboldt in January of 1978. Georgette passed away in February of 1979. In July of 1980, he was united in marriage to Edna Myers and the couple continued to maintain their home in Humboldt.
Miles was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. He served as Soil Conservation Commissioner and on the FMHA Board of Directors. He was a member of the Humboldt Conservation Board, a life member of the Humboldt Rifle and Pistol Club, a life member of the N.R.A., and a life member of the VFW and American Legion.
Those left to cherish Miles’ memory are his wife, Edna of Humboldt; his son, William (Vicki) Holden of Rutland; daughter, Deborah (Mark) Reiter of Monticello, MN; step-son, Robert J. Myers of Humboldt; grandchildren, Eric (fiancé, Jennifer Hackbarth) Holden, Brianne (Andrew) Martin, and Angela (Chad) Reiter Satre; great grandchildren, Sam and Sophie. Also surviving are his step granddaughters, Michelle Myers and Alesia (Todd) Fergerson; step great granddaughters, Jessie, Mallory, Miranda, Alexis, Sarah and Erica; and great-great grandchildren, Cameron, Bella, Rae, Jayda, Brook, Sam, and Beau. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Georgette Lee Holden; and sisters, Bernice Coyle, Violet Berge, Bonnie Alexander, and Joyce Wilke.
