Phillip P. Bastian, 69, of Humboldt, passed away March 21, 2011 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Walden Paige officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery, Fort Dodge with full Military Honors by the Sathers-Odgaard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240 and Adams American Legion Post 119. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday with a VFW Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home In Humboldt.
Phillip Paul Bastian, the son of Jonathon and Margaret (Schwendemann) Bastian, was born December 15, 1941 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Phil was raised on a farm north of Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1960. Following his education, Phil made his home in Rochester, Minnesota before enlisting into the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Grasp and USS Chemung during the Vietnam War in the Gulf of Tonkin and on the Mekong River. Following his honorable discharge, Phil returned to Humboldt where he helped with the family farming operations. He was also employed in the Humboldt County Assessors office before becoming the manager of the VFW Post 5240 in Dakota City for many years.
Phil was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240 where he took great pride in his involvement in Local and State and National offices including 1,2, and 3 year trustee, Adjutant, Junior Vice Commander, Senior Vice Commander, Commander, and All State Quartermaster for 6 years in the local post, State Membership Chairman, 10th District Membership Chair, Junior Vice Commander, and Senior Vice Commander for the State, and the National Aid de Camp. He was also a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the time he spent on the farm and rarely missed the State Fair. He also enjoyed golfing, trips to the casino, fishing, hunting, and bowling. Phil dearly loved living in Humboldt and his involvement with the community, his family and his friends. He will be remembered for the glint in his eye, his mischievous grin, “Phil’s Famous Roast Beef Dinners”, and his potato salad.
Phil is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Arnola “Arnie” Bastian of Cary, IL; nephew, John Bastian of Cary, IL; nieces, Diane Gascon of Greenwell Spring, LA, Julie Grubb of Bonita Springs, FL, Linda Marquis of Grimes, and Suzanne Westergaard of Johnston; sister-in-law, Donna Bastian of Des Moines; his former wife, Jeanie Bastian of Atlantic; step-son, Chad Davis of Englewood, CO; step-daughter, Angela Swearingen of Carroll; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Ted Bastian.
Memorials will be made to the VFW Post 5240, Pheasants Forever, and the Paula J. Baber Hospice House.
