Richard F. Blomker, 94, of Humboldt, passed away July 22, 2017 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2017 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Gene Broughton officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is assisting the family.
Mr. Blomker is survived by his daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Schoeller of Clear Lake; sons, Bill (Diane) Blomker of Fort Dodge, Rev. Richard (Kathy) Blomker of Cottage Grove, WI, and Douglas (Kathy) Blomker of Harrisburg, SD; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Luella (Folk) Blomker; his wife, Edith Blomker in 2005; grandson, Ryan Loftus; sister, Cleo Cook; and brothers, Henry and Kenneth Blomker.
Richard F. Blomker, the son of William Oliver and Luella (Folk) Blomker, was born December 16, 1922 at Humboldt, Iowa. He received his education at Humboldt and attended Humboldt High School where he excelled in football. Following his graduation, he considered an offer to play football for the University of Iowa, but began farming with his father instead. On November 9, 1942, he was united in marriage to Edith Lucille Olson and the couple made their home on a farm in Humboldt County. In 1944, Richard was drafted into the United States Navy and received his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He then served aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Cabot, in the South Pacific. Following his honorable discharge, Richard returned home to Edith and the couple farmed together for many years. In 1984, they moved to Humboldt and in 1987, Richard retired from farming. Mrs. Blomker passed away in 2005 and Richard continued to maintain his home until becoming a resident of the Humboldt Care Center North. He passed away there on the morning of July 22, 2017 at the age of 94.
Richard was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed the many hours he spent in his woodworking shop. He also enjoyed gardening and helping with maintenance at the fair grounds.
