Robert L. Hagar, 86, of Humboldt, passed away December 4, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt with full military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240 and Adams American Legion Post 119. Visitation is from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Mr. Hagar is survived by his children, Lynn (Linda) Hagar of Plainfield, IL, and Laura (Tim) Neustrom of Sioux City, IA; grandchildren, Andrea and Allison Hagar and Traci and Robert Neustrom; brother, Benjamin Hagar of Milwaukee, WI; and sisters, Charlotte Rockow of Belmond and Geraldine Touchette of Milwaukee, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; sister-in-law, Doris Hagar; and brothers-in-law, Robert Touchette and Irvin Rockow.
Robert Lafayette Hagar, the son of Benjamin and Laura (Van Antwerp) Hagar, was born September 30, 1922 at Harvard, Illinois. As a child, he made his home with his family in the Chicago and Fond Du Lac areas until moving to Eagle Grove, Iowa as a teenager. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1942. From January 5, 1943 until March 22, 1946, Robert served in the United States Coast Guard as a Machinist Mate 1st Class during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned home and was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a trainman until 1950 when he went to work for Corn Belt Power COOP in Humboldt. He was united in marriage to Vera Mae Cormaney on September 11, 1951 at the First Presbyterian Church at Kamrar, Iowa. He retired as the Chief Engineer of the Humboldt generating plant on December 31, 1987. In his retirement, Robert enjoyed his part-time work for Hawkeye Leisure Trailers delivering trailers all over the country. Mrs. Hagar passed away in February of 2006 and Robert continued to maintain his home until moving to Northern Hills Retirement Community in Sioux City to be close to his daughter.
Robert was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodcarving, Scrabble and crosswords, helping his grandchildren with their school projects; attending is grandson’s baseball games, and playing cribbage at Northern Hills.
