Robert “Whitey” Marvin, 81, of Humboldt, passed away December 11, 2008 at his home. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. He will be laid to rest in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Whitey is survived by his wife, Charlotte Marvin of Humboldt; daughters, Margaret (Don) Hollingshead of Sioux City and Wendy (Tom) Froh of Dakota City; sons, Danny (Jamie) Marvin of Dakota City, Terry (Robin) Marvin of St. Paul Park, MN, and Kris (Susan) Marvin of Humboldt; 11 grandchildren; 11 ½ Great Grandchildren; brothers, Leslie Marvin of Nebraska and Keith (Anna Mae) Marvin of Charles City; and sisters, Dorothy Simpson of St. Ansgar, and Merle Crooks and Phyllis Pitz both of Charles City. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lester and Dale; and sisters, Rosie Crooks and Lucille Crooks.
Robert Lee Marvin, the son of Walter and Pearl (Emery) Marvin was born March 8, 1927 on a farm near Riceville, Iowa. He attended country school near Orchard, Iowa and following his education, worked for farmers in the area and in Minnesota. At he age of 18, Robert enlisted into the United States Army in early 1945. He received his basic training at Fort Wolters in Texas and served in Germany, North Africa, and Iran. He returned home for a time before reenlisting and was sent to Alaska where he served as a military policeman. Following his discharge, he went to work for the Oliver Corporation at Charles City. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Reasland on September 25, 1949 and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge where Whitey was employed by the U.S. Gypsum Co. In 1955, he began working as an automotive body repairman and in 1974, he established Whitey’s Body Shop in Humboldt, which he owned an operated until his retirement in 2002.
Mr. Marvin was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. He was also a member of the NRA, the Humboldt Rifle and Pistol Club, and the OCRA fishing club. He enjoyed part time bodywork in his garage, gardening, woodworking, and caning chairs.
