Rod Dennis Shelgren, the son of Eddie and Judy (Thorson) Shelgren, was born December 20, 1964 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was raised on a farm near Gilmore City and attended school at Rolfe. He graduated from Rolfe High School in 1983 where he excelled in baseball and holds the record for pitching the most strikes in a game. He then played baseball for the Storm Lake Lakers and for Iowa Lakes Community College where he was enrolled in the Ag Program. In 1985, Rod joined his dad in the family farming operations and on November 28, 1992, he and Lindy where united in marriage. In 1995 the couple made their home on the family farm.
Rod enjoyed deer, pheasant, and coyote hunting especially with his son and his dad. He was active in his children’s sporting activities, coaching Brady’s baseball teams and helping Kenzie with her softball. Rod also enjoyed golfing with his friends, baseball, and playing in basketball league.
Following the interment services, the Shelgren family will greet friends and relatives for lunch in the fellowship hall of St. John’s Catholic Church in Gilmore City.
Rod is survived by his wife, Valinda “Lindy” Shelgren of Gilmore City; children, Machensey “Kenzie” and Brady both of Gilmore City; his parents, Eddie and Judy Shelgren of Humboldt; sister, Brenda (Paul) Wilson of Maple Grove, MN; Lindy's parents Joe and Sue Wald of Bradgate; sister-in-laws, Leslynn (Tom) Kleespies of Longmont, CO, Kaylene (Scott) Lang of Fort Dodge, and Kristelle (Jason) Caquelin of Longmont, CO; brother-in-laws, Joel (Cristina) Wald of Liberty, MO, and Cale Wald of Humboldt; and 12 nieces and nephews, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
