Ruth Celestine Vonderhaar, 97, died on Thursday, December 25, 2014 at Green Hills Healthcare Center in Ames, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Father James Tigges will be 11:00 a.m. Friday January 2, 2015. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery following mass. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church with a Parish Rosary at 10:30 a.m. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Celestine Vonderhaar was born May 2, 1917 in West Point, Iowa, daughter of Bernard and Clara (Pogge) Vonderhaar. She moved with her family to Humboldt in 1920. She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1934. She was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in 1937, working as an operator, commercial and plant clerk, and Chief Operator. In 1962 she transferred to Ames for the Chief Operator position. In 1964 she transferred to the Central District in Des Moines as District Force Management Supervisor. In that capacity she traveled to exchanges in the Des Moines area assisting the Chief Operators with force management work. In 1969 she accepted the same assignment in the Waterloo District, traveling to exchanges in Northeastern Iowa. She retired in 1979 and moved home to Humboldt to be close to family and friends.
Ruth was an active member of St. Mary’s Church where she served many years as Sacristan, and former member of the Mission Society. She enjoyed crafts, her favorite being decorating goose eggs. These unique keepsakes were gifted to family and friends. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Ruth is survived by her sister, Mildred Scoles of Webster City, Iowa, and ten nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Gerald, Arthur, and Adrian, and sister Mary and infant sister Clare.
