Shirley J. Haverly

September 21, 1937 — April 25, 2019

Shirley J. Haverly, 81, of Humboldt, peacefully passed away Thursday morning, April 25th, 2019 surrounded by her children at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge.

Shirley was born September 21, 1937 on a farm north of Wesley to Fred and Laura (Hauptly) Eden. She grew up in Wesley where she attended country school and graduated from Titonka High School in 1954. She then attended Mankato Commercial College before working at the Wesley drug store.

It was at the drug store that she first met the one and only love of her life. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Hugh Haverly spotted Shirley Eden through the drug store short order window. He knew a good farm girl when he saw one! The two were married on April 24, 1956 and made their home on their acreage north of Renwick in the spring of 1956. They decided to build the garage first so they could live in it while constructing their first home and starting their young family.

Shirley was a proud farmer’s wife who not only provided hot meals in the field but also drove the combine during harvest. Hugh and Shirley raised 4 children on the farm. They provided for their family through hard work and dedication to their farming for 38 years before retiring and building their home in Humboldt in 1994. During their marriage they spent 12 winters in Arizona and made dozens of lifelong friends there. Shirley enjoyed traveling with Hugh and her friends. Her love for traveling took her to Alaska, Canada Europe, New York, the New England States, and more.

Shirley was a member of the HCMH Auxiliary, St. Mary’s Ladies Society, St. mar’s Birthday Club, two card clubs, and the Renwick Hi Neighbor Club. She enjoyed her time she spent at the Renwick Library sipping coffee and catching up with old friends. She baked thousands of cookies and pies over the years that will never be duplicated quite the same. She took pride in attending her grandchildren’s functions and felt blessed to be able to celebrate hundreds of birthdays, weddings, and holiday celebrations with her large family. Shirley will always be remembered for her impeccable style, her compassionate soul, and her delectable sugar cookies. Above all, she will be remembered for her steadfast faith and love for the Lord.

She is survived by her children, Jerry (Helen) Haverly of Humboldt, Larry (LoAnn) Haverly of Renwick, Diana Haverly (Nate Blankenhagen) of Humboldt, and Lori Poland (special friend Bill) of Carroll, 14 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by one brother-in-law, Paul Haverly of Algona, four sisters-in-law, Inez Eden of Woden, Audrey Haverly of Algona, Rose Ann Haverly of Britt and Mary Joyce Haverly of Garner. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hugh her infant twin brothers Everett and Elden, her brothers Donald and Alvin and her sister-in-law Mary Eden.
