Vivian E. Kirby, 97, of Humboldt, passed away January 22, 2014 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt with Fr. James Tigges officiating.  Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery at Gilmore City.  Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.  A parish rosary will be at 5 p.m. and parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by her children, Marcia (Grant) Trygstad of Forrest City, Mary Ann (Tom) Burns of Springfield, IL, and Michael Kirby of Algona; daughter-in-law, Shirley Kirby of Peculiar, MO; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Susan (Groetken) Sauter; husband, George Kirby in 1978; son, Gary Kirby; and her brothers and sister.

Vivian Elizabeth Sauter, the daughter of Will and Susan (Groetken) Sauter, was born March 5, 1916 on a farm near Varina, Iowa.  She was raised and educated at Varina and graduated from St. Columbkille Catholic High School.  Following her education, Vivian worked in a shoe store and as a telephone operator at Fonda.  While attending a big band dance, Vivian met George Kirby and the couple was united in marriage on December 31, 1940 at Varina.  They farmed together near Gilmore City until their retirement in 1976 when they moved to Humboldt.  Mr. Kirby passed away in September on 1978 at the age of 67.

Vivian was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she was active in many church activities.  She enjoyed her participation in card club, traveling, reading, and was a member of the Gilmore City Bona Fide Study Club.  She loved the time spent with her children and grandchildren and took time for daily prayer.
