Wanda R. Thilges, 96, of Bode, passed away August 28, 2014 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode with the Rev. Steve Bliss officiating. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, Bode. Visitation with the family will be from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Wanda is survived by her daughter Michele (Merle) Opheim of Iowa City; grandchildren, Benita Carriger of West Des Moines, Bryena Opheim of North Liberty, Blaine Opheim of Coralville, Deb Lopes of Castro Valley, CA, and Rick Palmer of San Ramon, CA; and great grandchildren, Brittany and Emily Lopes, Jackson and Lucas Palmer, and Everly Rae Opheim. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Floyd Palmer and Jacob “Jake” M. Thilges; her son, Mark Palmer; and her parents, Roy W. and Anna J. (Johnson) Knudtson.
Wanda Ruth Knudtson, the daughter of Roy William and Anna Juliet (Johnson) Knudtson, was born November 12, 1917 at Algona, Iowa. She received her education at Bode and graduated from Bode High School in 1935. She continued her education by attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career in the school districts of Wapello, Newhall, and Ida Grove. On May 27, 1944 she was united in marriage to William Floyd Palmer and the couple made their home in Massachusetts while Mr. Palmer served in the military. Following the war, they moved to Bode where Wanda taught at Ottosen and Bode. She was also employed in Monson’s Store at Bode. Mr. Palmer passed away in December of 1967 and Wanda continued to make her home at Bode. On August 20, 1971, she married Jacob “Jake” Thilges. Mr. Thilges passed away in November of 2009 and in January of 2010, Wanda became a resident of the Humboldt Care Center North.
Wanda was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed making lamps and lampshades.
