Wilbur L. Curran 83 of Humboldt passed away December 28, 2013 at Unity Point Trinity Hospital in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be held Tuesday December 31 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Reverend Gene Broughton officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Mason –Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Wilbur Lloyd Curran was born July 9, 1930 in Lake City, Iowa to Lloyd and Leta (Moore) Curran. Wilbur grew at the Calhoun County Home, where he and his family ran the farm. He attended school in Rockwell City and graduated from Rockwell City High School in 1948. Wilbur attended radio school in Omaha for a year before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1949. He served during the Korean War and was discharged in 1953. On August 29, 1954 Wilbur married Elaine Kleemeier. The couple welcomed three children; daughters Lori and Holly and son Bill. Wilbur and Elaine moved to Rockwell City after their marriage and lived there until moving to Humboldt in 1957. Wilbur and Elaine lived in a house on Rainbow drive until 2010 when Elaine passed away and Wilbur moved to the Long Term care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Wilbur sold Pioneer Seed Corn for 41 years. He owned and operated Quality Seed Company, and he owned and operated Country Florals in Humboldt with his wife Elaine. Wilbur ran a greenhouse in which he raised mums, poinsettias, and many of the flowers for the shop. Wilbur was a pilot and engaged in crop dusting. Wilbur had many hobbies including fishing and woodcarving. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the Backseat Diner. Most of all, Wilbur enjoyed his family, and he attended as many sporting events in which his grandchildren were involved as possible. Next to his family, Wilbur was dedicated to the advancement of the community of Humboldt.
Remaining to cherish the memory of Wilbur are his daughter Holly (Glenn) Lyons of Humboldt, son Bill (Pamela) Curran of Brighton, CO, sister Shirley Lutz of Phoenix, AZ, grandchildren Amy Schoomer, Jason Vinsand, Chad Lyons, Chelsie Lyons, and Jordan Lyons, Anna Curran, and Ian Curran; great-grandchildren Luke and Adam Schoomer, Amaya Preston, and Aubrie Vinsand. Preceding Wilbur in death were his parents, wife Elaine on September 4, 2010, and daughter Lori Vinsand.
The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of services.
