Audrey Pederson was born November 23, 1929 on a farm near Bode, Iowa. She was the first of eight children born to Ernest and Ruth (Gullixon) Pederson. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school in the Bode area until she left school to assist with the care of her siblings. One summer she met Harland “Cap” Harris who was working as a thrashing hand on the farm. They fell in love and married January 25, 1949. The couple welcomed four children to their union. They moved to town, and Cap began working driving a truck for the local stockyard. Cap passed away in 1974, and Audrey began working outside of the home. She worked as a waitress and as head cook at the Bode High School. Audrey moved to Des Moines in 1982 after all of her children had graduated from high school. She worked as a baker for Iowa Methodist Medical Center for many years.

Audrey enjoyed reading books and working crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed fishing with the family. She also had an affinity for horses and attended many horse shows. Although her vocation involved cooking and baking, she derived a great deal of pleasure cooking and baking for people in her spare time. Scuffles would break out at family gatherings over who got to take home Audrey’s brownies.

Remaining to cherish her memory are her children Jack (Sue) Harris of Sun City Center, Florida; Steve (Pam) Harris of Johnston; Brett Harris of Des Moines; and Peggy Steve) Rorebeck of Urbandale. Audrey’s surviving grandchildren include Tonya Sarrubi, Jason Harris, Erica Linn, Boyce (Courtney) Harris, Jennifer Harris, Stephanie Harris, and 16 great-grandchildren. Siblings Richard Pederson and Rosalind Collins also survive. Preceding Audrey in death were her parents, siblings Ruthie Bakken, Douglas Pederson, Johnny Pederson, Pete Pederson, Karen Moen.

The family requests that memorials be given to HCI Care Services, the Hospice agency that provided care for Audrey in her last days.
