Barbara graduated from Waterloo West High School and then attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. She worked in the office of the football coach at ICCC. On July 24, 1970, Barbara married Earl Cushman at Webster City. They lived in Fort Dodge until 1972 when they moved to an acreage near Humboldt where she spent the rest of her life and raised her three children.
Barbara was a devoted wife and mother, and loved the farmstead. She enjoyed raising several farm animals including sheep, geese, chickens, ducks; and planting large fruit and vegetable gardens. Providing healthy home-cooked meals was a source of pride for Barbara. She enjoyed attending auction sales and later online auction sites to find thoughtful, unique gifts for her loved ones. Barbara had many other interests including sewing, quilting, knitting, painting, music, and reading. She knitted hats, scarves, socks, and gloves for family members as well as sewing quilts in honor of special occasions. Barbara enjoyed reading, particularly Charles Dickens, biographies and other non-fiction. Barbara used all of her abilities to care for and show her love for family members.
Remaining to honor Barbara’s memory are her husband Earl, son Brian (Robin) Cushman of Webster City, son Matthew (Michelle) Cushman of Ankeny, and daughter Kara (Jay Peskoff) Cushman of Delray Beach, FL, grandchildren Ryan, Ethan, Gabriella, and Abigail. Preceding Barbara in death were her parents and parents-in-law.
