Donna M. Northrop, 82, of Dakota City, passed away September 2, 2016 at her home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7th in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6th at the funeral home.
Donna Marie McKenna, the daughter of Francis “Mac” and Alberta (Lehman) McKenna, was born July 18, 1934 along with her twin brother, Dean, at Humboldt, Iowa. She was raised by her grandparents, Freda and Emil Lehman and received her education in Humboldt. Donna graduated, with the class of 1953, from Humboldt High School where she was active in the Girls Recreational Association basketball program.
On December 11, 1953, Donna married James Howard Northrop and the couple made their home in Dakota City. They then made their home in Humboldt until moving to their acreage west of Humboldt. The marriage was dissolved in 1980.
Donna was employed in the hot lunch program at the Humboldt High School and later worked for her sister-in-law, Helen Wickre at “Closets, Yours and Mine” in Humboldt. Donna loved butterflies. She enjoyed bowling league and participated in state and national bowling tournaments. Her family will remember her as an amazing cook and cherish the Hallmark Christmas ornaments she gave them. She loved family trips to Okoboji and hunting bargains at the grocery store. Above all, she loved her family and the time she spent with them.
Donna is survived by her children, Colleen (Michael) Wabeke of Albert City, IA, Roger (Denise) Northrop of Maxwell, IA, and Karen (Bret) Peterson of Humboldt; grandchildren, Jessica (Danny Kerr) Heideman of Centerville, VA, Emily (Dana) Westphal of Humboldt, Taylor (Morgan) Heideman of Cedar Falls, Kayla (Ross) Newton of Dakota City, Katie (Andrew) Staton of Humboldt, and Megan Northrop of Ankeny; great grandchildren, Gavin Heideman, Owen and Elliana Westphal, Braelyn Newton, and Jefferson and Harper Staton; brother, Dennis (Pat) McKenna of Eldora; and sister, Rebecca Fiderlick of Fort Dodge. She was preceded in death by her parents; twin brother, Dean McKenna; and brother, Jerry McKenna.
