Elwin L. Hodges, 95, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday evening, June 19, 2023, with his family by his side at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Elwin, the son of Darrel and Gladys (Barnum) Hodges was born October 4, 1927, at Logan, Iowa. He was raised in Harrison County and graduated from Mondamin High School. He taught rural school for 4 Harrison County schools. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1950 during the Cold War (literally) at NAS Adak and NAS Kodiak, both in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. He was united in marriage to Ramona Davis on December 23, 1948, in Logan. The couple made their home in Logan until moving in 1955 to Garner, Iowa and then Humboldt in 1959. He was a director of social services for 34 years until retiring in 1984. After retirement he worked 13 years for W&H Co-op.
Elwin was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He joined Lions on June 6, 1956, and was a member until passing away. Elwin held all offices at the club and district level, including District Governor (1970-71). He was the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Lions International Presidential Award. He was also active in the community and enjoyed his service to the community. Elwin's hobbies included gardening, his many Model A Fords and handing out over 140,000 FORT-U-NUTS (made from peanut shells) since 1963.
Those left to cherish Elwin's memory are his sons Dennis (Donna) Hodges of Evansville, IN and Terry (Carmen Black) of rural Dallas Center; grandchildren Scott, Lisa, Katie and Todd; 13 great grandchildren and his brothers & sisters Leslie, Othal, Bonnie, Jerry and Janet. He was preceded in death by his wife Ramona, parents Darrel and Gladys, and brothers & sisters Dennis, Leland, Duane, Beverly and Norma.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28th at Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27th at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service in Humboldt. Burial with military rites by the Sathers-Odgaard VFW & American Legion will be in Indian Mound Cemetery. Memorials will be used to benefit the Humboldt Lions Club. www.masonlindhart.com
