James M. Thoden

James M. Thoden, 80, of Humboldt, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday evening, September 27, 2023.

He was born November 3, 1942 in rural Humboldt County, the son of Martin William and Irma (McCrady) Thoden.  He grew up on the farm and at an early age moved with his family to Dakota City where he attended Humboldt schools, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1961.  He was employed at Cody’s Grocery Store and later Hoods Super Value.  Jim was united in marriage to Nanette M. Erickson on January 19, 1964.  The couple made their home in Humboldt and in 1977 built a new home on an acreage on the west fork of the Des Moines River.  Most of Jim’s career was as a mail carrier with the United States Post Office until his retirement in 2000.  He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, trap shooting, gardening and raising buffalo and pumpkins.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nanette of Humboldt, his children James B. Thoden of Madison, Wisconsin, Kurt Thoden of Humboldt and Lynne (Shane) Robertson of Urbandale, his grandchildren; Candice, Craig, Nate and Taryn, great-grandchildren Charlotte and Cadence, his sister Gayle (Dave) Fokken of Humboldt, his brother’s –in-law, Gary (Sharon) Erickson and Dale Erickson all of Humboldt and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Norene Hansen-Stensland, Nelda Nelson and Norma Janssen.

A Memorial Gathering will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2023, at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service.  Casual or hunting and fishing attire is most welcome.  www.masonlindhart.com
