John Wagner, the son of George and Amalia (Illg) Wagner, was born April 15, 1941 at Irvington, Iowa. He attended school at St. Joseph and graduated from St. Joe High School. Following his education, John went to work for M.T. McGuire and Redding Construction. He then moved to Phoenix where he continued his work in road building with Stuart Brothers and Chetester Co. He returned home where he began farming. In 1967, John helped establish Blacktop Service Co. with Frank Wagner and Ed Redding. On August 2, 1969, John was united in marriage to Pat Gronbach. The couple returned briefly to Arizona before settling in Dakota City in 1975.
John was a true Iowan and a farmer at heart. Above all, John loved his family and looked forward to them all spending time together. He was a faithful Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Church in Humboldt where he belonged to the Knights of Columbus. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching the RFD Channel and building his large farm and construction die cast toy collection.
Those left to cherish John’s memory are his wife of nearly 48 years, Pat of Humboldt; his children, Jayson (Darcy) Wagner of Anamosa, Tera (Doug) Dollman of Ankeny, and Justin (Barbara) Wagner of Gallup, NM; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Margaret, and Jonah Wagner, Ella and Nolan Dollman, and Amalia, Gina, Giada, and Ava Wagner; and his sister, Shirley Brofer of Tempe, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Frank Wagner; and nephew, Chuck Wagner.
